Salt Lake City, Utah - In collaboration with Bad Dog Rediscovers AmericaTM, the SLC Main Library presents, Through the Eyes of Youth. This show highlights the artwork of local teens as they work with professional artists in both photography and comic art.
Through the Bad Dog Art Apprenticeship Program, youth have the opportunity to be mentored by professional artists. This past summer photographer, Bruce Hucko, worked with several Bad Dog students, encouraging them to incorporate a "sense of place" into their work. He sent them to such places as Hogle Zoo and Red Butte Gardens to express their own interpretation of these familiar places.
Bad Dog students also worked with comic artists, Bill Galvan and Trevor Nielson, as well as scriptwriter, Quinn Johnson, of The Scrapyard DetectivesTM series. Charged with creating a special mini issue, each teen illustrated five pages of the comic. The completed issue is now on display along with photographs taken by students of Bad Dog's photography apprenticeship.
Each student feels these projects have dramatically improved their skills and confidence. Teen artist, Abigail Sloan, sums it up when she describes how the mentorship has affected her photography: "I really see an overall improvement in my work. I learned that the most important part of a photograph is the whole photograph. That could apply to other things as well."
Bad Dog Rediscovers America and its students would like to thank the Salt Lake City Main Public Library for allowing this opportunity to show their work. They would also like to thank the Jarvis & Constance Doctorow Family Foundation, Marriner S. Eccles Foundation, Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, & Parks Program, and Salt Lake City Arts Council for their generous funding of this and other projects.
Through the Eyes of Youth runs from December 14, 2009 to February 5, 2010, with a public reception on Thursday December 17, 2009 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The SLC Main Library is located at 210 East 400 South in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.
